Fragments and Relics

I’m always drawn to old relics. When I was a kid, I always said I wanted to be an archaeologist or an artist. Now that I’m grown up, I’ve realized that I can be both if I want to. The dig that I participated in two years ago in Israel just whetted my appetite for ancient things. Living in the south, eastern U.S. there are small opportunities for finding ancient fragments, but I’ve been trying to create some of my own to mimic that look in my jewelry. Using some of my metal techniques that I learned in the Richard Salley workshop and a few things that I’ve been trying on my own, these are the pieces that I have come up with.

Pewter, copper, African trading beads, glass, wood, and stone were used in these newest creations. Not for everyone perhaps, but I’m sure there is someone out there who is as hooked on old things as I am.

Creative Sparks

My recent class combined with my flea market finds have inspired some new pieces. The yellow turquoise set in a copper bezel is combined with some colorful beads for a summery look.

Stamps from my Richard Salley class have become earrings and also bracelets which are made with leather from a vintage satchel and vintage buckles. You can find these at Wall Candy Custom Framing and Gallery or Cliques Hair Salon in Columbia, TN or contact me directly.

Creativity Infusion

Ahhh….so much fun crammed into one day! What can I say…the Art-is-You conference was a blast! I took a jewelry class with Richard Salley called Alchemy and Elements. He made everything SO easy and clear. I came away with several pieces in various stages of completion and a renewed excitement and an anticipation of many creative hours in my studio.

Let us pause for a kitty interruption. As I was taking these photos Tilly wanted to get into the act. She kept rubbing on my camera and making it difficult to get a good shot. After giving into her attention craving, I got back to business.

If you ever get a chance to take a class from Richard (assisted by his talented wife Jane, an artist in her own right) you will be glad that you did. The people that you meet in these classes are instant friends with kindred spirits and your creativity will be filled to the brim.

More to come about the conference in future posts.
